Imam Ali’s Sermon about Sinners

 Part ONE

It behoves those who are free from [some] sins and have been blessed with such security [from sins] to take pity on those who sin and disobey [their Lord]. Showing gratitude [for this security] should prevail over them and prevent them from [finding faults with] others. So what makes a fault-finder blame and reproach his brother for his affliction [of sin]? Does he not remember His sins that God has concealed while they were bigger than his brother’s sin that he is picking on? How can he blame him for a sin that he has himself committed one like it? And if he has not committed the exact same sin, he has committed other sins that are much greater. By God, even if one has not committed any major sins but has only committed minor ones, his boldness to find the faults of people is a great sin.

Part TWO

O servants of God! Do not rush to blame anyone for his sin, because that might have been forgiven for him. And do not feel yourself secure from even a minor sin, because you may be punished for it. Therefore, what you know about your own faults should suffice every one of you from anything that you learn about the faults of others, and giving thanks for your exemption should keep you busy from what others have been afflicted with.
